1.- Sólo tienen incontinencia urinaria las personas mayores

Una de cada cuatro mujeres sufre de incontinencia en algún momento de su vida, y no tiene que ser precisamente en la tercera edad. Hay momentos clave en los que es habitual: en el embarazo, por el peso del bebé, después del parto (sobre todo si ha sido un parto vaginal complicado o con instrumental), o durante la menopausia, debido a los cambios hormonales. También hay circunstancias específicas que pueden provocarlas, como practicar deportes que requieran impactar contra el suelo (correr o jugar al baloncesto), o tener sobrepeso o estreñimiento.

2.- No tienen cura

La incontinencia se debe principalmente al debilitamiento del suelo pélvico y existen soluciones para paliarlo y reducir sus efectos. Si tienes el mínimo indicio de que tu suelo pélvico no está en condiciones, o se te escapan algunas gotas de orina, debes consultar con un especialista para que valore tu caso. Muchas mujeres necesitarán fortalecer la musculatura con ejercicios regulares de rehabilitación. Para otras, se precisará una intervención quirúrgica. Siempre debe valorar tu caso un especialista. Si un médico te dice que «es propio de la edad» o «que tienes que asumirlo» y lo deja pasar, pide una segunda opinión. En muchos hospitales ya existen Unidades de Suelo Pélvico, un equipo interdisciplinar de especialistas, que revisará tu caso desde múltiples enfoques para indicarte el tratamiento más apropiado.

3.- Me van a juzgar

Cuando se tiene incontinencia urinaria, es normal que una se sienta insegura e incómoda, pero nadie va a juzgarte por ello. Como hemos señalado antes, es mucho más habitual de lo que creemos. A una de cada cuatro mujeres le pasa, así que en la próxima reunión de amigas o con la familia, imagina cuántas estarán viviendo tu misma situación. Atrévete a hablarlo con otras mujeres, con tu pareja, tu hija… y sobre todo, con tu médico. Desdramatizar el problema y asumirlo es la mejor forma de empezar a solucionarlo. Recuerda que tomar las riendas de forma activa, te hará sentir mucho más segura de ti misma.

4.- Tendré que dejar de hacer todo lo que hacía antes

Las pérdidas de orina, incluso cuando son abundantes, no implican que tengas que dejar de hacer las cosas que hacías antes. Hay productos específicos para la incontinencia urinaria que te ayudarán a seguir con tus paseos, tu gimnasia, tus citas o lo que quieras. Sin miedos, segura y confiada. Debes ser tú quien controle tus pérdidas de orina y no al revés.
